Cigar of the Week: RoMa Craft Quinquagenario

Cigar of the Week: RoMa Craft Quinquagenario

My first few puffs are bready and peppery, a combination that I have grown to find quite intoxicating over the years. There’s also a unique combination of fruit and spices in the background that I can only describe as the cigar version of Dr. Pepper.

I grabbed a 4-pack when these were first released, and today I’m smoking my last one. There have been few cigars in the last 18 months that I have looked forward to as much, and I regret not buying boxes to share with friends. Just a couple weeks ago we still had some of these gems, but taking a peek now it looks like we’re sold out. Fingers crossed we can find some more!

Quinquagenario is easily one of my Top 3 favorite Ecuadorian Sumatra wrappers. It’s sophisticated enough that a plain band is clearly the right choice, delivering on an understated approach that very few cigar brands can achieve. But it’s also bold enough to stand up to everything from coffee, whiskey, wine, and cocktails.

I also really enjoy what Skip did with Volstead. His work with E.P. Carrillo on Quinquagenario is evident in RoMa Craft’s regular production blend that also utilizes an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper for maximum effect. Someone once said that if you aren’t learning, you’re dying, and one thing’s for certain: Skip Martin is alive and well.

Dropping the first ash, dark chocolate and hints of gingerbread rise to the surface along with a touch of saltiness. Despite my bad timing on the first ever Cigar of the Week that was out of stock – oops! – I’m really glad to see how this cigar has progressed in the last nine months or so. It’s only become more decadent since my first experience, and I can only imagine what it may become in another year.

I once read that Skip wanted this cigar to be the best thing he’s ever created, and that’s a high bar to cross. I think he hit his mark, though, with a blend that’s caught my eye every time I passed the humidor.

Have you smoked RoMa Craft’s Quinquagenario as well? If so, please don’t hesitate to drop us a comment with your thoughts!
