Discussion: Cigar Packaging & Design

Discussion: Cigar Packaging & Design

Happy Thursday, folks!

Last night, Black Label Trading Company’s allotment of Bishops Blend dropped on Small Batch and it got me thinking:

What’s your favorite cigar or package design?

Don't forget to sign-in and join the conversation below in the comments for a chance to win a Small Batch gift card!

Without a doubt, Bishops Blend is a beautiful sight to behold from Oveja Negra.  It’s bold, gritty, and something that I want in my humidor ASAP.  Here are a few more pics from Small Batch:

I’m a sucker for interesting boxes, and this one always catches my eye.  James Brown definitely knows how to stop me in my tracks.

And then there’s Davidoff’s Sir Winston Churchill LE 2019 The Traveller.  I haven’t been able to open this box in person yet, but I’ve been working through my 3-pack lately and it’s hitting all the right notes for me.

The complete package, however, is what compelled me to splurge for the box.  Take a look:

I love the detail on both the inside and outside of the box.  Davidoff seemed to convey quite a bit while maintaining a minimalist approach.  And, while the first things that drew me to the box were the hinges and clasp, I’m very much curious about the cedar tray that allows space for a Boveda pack.  If it turns out that these boxes hold a seal, it’ll be a huge win for a united fashion and function philosophy.

And, of course, I'll never forget when I opened a new box of Serino Royale Medios to find that they began implementing the magnetic lid.  Something so simple put such a large smile on my face.

My favorite so far is the Espinosa Las 6 Provincias LHB. The artwork and design on the 10ct boxes is beautiful. And they have that neat swinging box that is interesting as well.

Love the Cuban style SLB with a date stamp at the bottom. Simple is better for me.

Viaje and BLTC have great packaging. James Brown is great at artisticly implementing skulls in his artwork. Reminds me of the cover of a Misfits cassette. Deliverance Nocturne is my all time favorite packaging design. In my top 5 cigars as well.

Boxes are great but I am a Band Man!  Nothing beats a solid design and premium engineered cigar band!

I am glad you included the Travelers because that box is beautiful. I will be using mine as a drybox. I will toss in the Davidoff Art line because the boxes are, well art.

The Bishops Blend box looks like a Tat Black box.

As much as I love the detail and ornate artwork of a dress box there is something about a Cuban style cabinet SLB box. I love the raw wood look that is perfectly complemented by the tax seals, and Habanos label. Lots of cool detail and anti counterfeiting marks in there. A perfect blend of homage to the past and detail of the present.

Nothing like cutting the seal and looking at a wheel of cigar bands perfectly oriented up towards you with a silk ribbon tying them together. That plus the raw Spanish cedar and tobacco smell is unmatched by anything.

Pretty neat to see respect to tradition paid by the likes of Pete Johnson of Tatuaje and Kyle Gellis of Warped. Many of their cigars come in SLB’s with similar label placement and design. Plus they date stamp as well. Love it.

I can't count how many times I've said I'd rater have a cheaper cigar than a nice fancy box. Save the consumers some money and let the cigar do the talking please.

Warped La Colmena Unico Especial will always be a favorite of mine for packaging. From the colors to the cedar lined tin, its definitely an eye catcher.

My favorite packaging is RoMa Craft, it’s simple but it is quality. I also really like JRE Aladino packaging, that bar scene they have is awesome.

I love cigar boxes and actually put them to good use.  I keep the really cool ones in the Man Cave on display and always keep one on the couch to store the remote controls in.

I enjoy ornate, fancy packaging as long as the cigar underneath it is worth buying. A fancy box and bands for great cigars? Love it. Cool-looking marketing for a crappy cigar? Worst nightmare.

The Viaje Honey & Hand Grenades packaging is probably the packaging that I am most taken with.

I do not personally have it but I was also intrigued by the Traveller's packaging also. MY favorite that I have personally acquired has been the Davidoff Diademas Finas jar from last year.

Nicest of any box I have is the HR habano. They are pretty classy.

I’ll go for throw back for me. The first ultra premium cigar I received was when the diamond crown Maximus first came out over 10 years ago. I remember my dad buying a box (which look pretty great) and being floored by the elite look and artistic band it flaunted. Not only that but it was more than a looker, tasted fantastic too!

One of my first thoughts was that Dunbarton Tobacco and Trust's Sombremesa, it's a very simple box but the artwork inside of the lid is what does it for me. But as mentioned Davidoffs Sir Winston the Traveller is a sight for sure, and from what I have read it does double as a humidor. So I may have to splurge for one have have something nicer looking than my Tupperdor

Craft 2018 had an outstanding box / presentation

I've always liked a box with some good artwork on the inside like Foundation's El Gueguense Wise Man Maduro.
