Talk to us about how Jake Wyatt Cigar Company was founded. What made you guys decide to launch a cigar brand and how did you decide on the name?
The inception of Jake Wyatt Cigar Company traces back to a memorable journey to the Dominican Republic, where we ventured to collaborate on an exclusive blend with our close friends. Our path led us to the La Aurora factory, where we had the privilege of immersing ourselves in the expertise of Manuel Inoa, the company's master blender.
Under his guidance, we delved into the rich history of cigar craftsmanship, tracing its journey from seed to shelf. That experience ignited a passion within me, sparking an obsession that has flourished ever since.
Embarking on the journey to launch a brand initially felt like a distant dream. However, as we delved deeper into exploring specific tobaccos, the wheels of possibility began to spin. Our aim was clear: to craft flavor-forward cigars reminiscent of the exceptional blends we've cherished for years.
Enter Joel Marrero, our Master Blender extraordinaire. With his expertise and guidance, what once seemed like a mere dream swiftly transformed into a tangible reality.
Naming our venture proved to be a puzzling endeavor, until a moment of clarity dawned upon us. It was then that we recognized the significance of this opportunity. The names of the founders' sons, Jake and Wyatt, resonated profoundly, instantly capturing the essence of strength and sophistication. With our brand name solidified, we eagerly embarked on our exhilarating journey.
What can you tell us about where Jake Wyatt Cigars are created?
Tabacalera JVM initially served as our master blender's original factory in Tamboril. However, as the company flourished, an exciting opportunity arose to unite and expand our operations. This led to the establishment of our current 20,000 square foot factory in the Gurabo Zona Franca.
Our new factory, affectionately named Casamorabo, embodies the fusion of three key elements: "Casa" for home, "Amor" for love, and "Gurabo" for our location.
When creating a new blend, what do you look for?
In our quest to craft new blends, we constantly seek out flavors that ignite our creative sparks. The world of tobacco offers an array of remarkable options, which we eagerly explore through experimentation. While we've developed dozens of blends, not all have made it to the production line.
We uphold rigorous standards, meticulously scrutinizing each blend until our internal committee reaches a unanimous decision to bring it to market. This dedication ensures that only the finest creations earn a place in our lineup.
Who are your biggest inspirations in the industry?
Among our earliest sources of inspiration, as previously noted, was Manuel Inoa. His expertise in the realm of tobacco is unparalleled, but even more impressive is his character as a person. Manuel consistently goes above and beyond, generously sharing his wealth of knowledge and extending his friendship whenever we seek guidance or support.
In four short years, your brand has grown significantly into almost ten full lines. What do you attribute to your success?
In the world of cigar-making, excellence goes beyond crafting exceptional cigars. A particular statement has become ingrained in my mind, especially within this industry: "Knowledge is gained through experience, but wisdom is earned through the trials of bad experiences." This mantra underscores the importance of learning from both successes and setbacks, ultimately guiding us toward greater wisdom and success.
Jake Wyatt cigars certainly look and taste unique in the marketplace. What goes into making sure you distinguish yourselves on the shelf and the patio alike?
Our vision was to craft cigars that would leave a lasting impression, setting a new standard in the industry. In today's interconnected world, marketing and social media play pivotal roles. We aimed not only to produce exceptional cigars but also to present them in an aesthetically pleasing manner, ensuring they could be enjoyed in any setting, from the most refined to the most casual.
Although your cigars require considerable time and energy to create the wrapper highlights, the price remains affordable for many cigar enthusiasts. I think the only question is, “HOW!?”
Our secret to delivering a premium 5-star product at a 3-star price lies in our ownership of the factory and our unwavering commitment to detail. Maintaining control over every aspect of production within our factory is paramount to our success. Without this level of control, achieving what we do would be near impossible. While we continue to refine our processes and products, we remain dedicated to constant improvement, always striving to surpass our own standards.
How would you describe your cigars to someone that’s never tried them before? What advice would you give on how to start sampling your portfolio?
Once more, we pride ourselves on crafting flavor-forward cigars that cater to a broad spectrum of enthusiasts, whether they're newcomers or seasoned aficionados. Our goal is to be inclusive and mindful of this diversity. From our mild yet flavorful Appendix II Ecuadorian Connecticut to the robust richness of our Icarus Maduro, our portfolio offers something for everyone to savor and appreciate.
What is something that most people don’t know about you?
In my world, anonymity and service are inseparable companions. The joy of selflessly assisting others, purely for the sake of bringing happiness, enriches our lives profoundly. I owe much of my success to the incredible individuals within and beyond this industry who have supported and guided me along the way. It's essential to remember this when extending a helping hand to others on their journey.
If there’s just one thing our audience should take away from this interview, what would you want them to know?
If there's one thing to remember from this, it's Herbert Spencer's insightful words: "There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments, and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance—that principle is contempt prior to investigation."
What can Jake Wyatt fans look forward to in the next 12-18 months?
We're always hard at work on fresh projects, and our latest endeavor is the complete lineup of our newest release, the Icarus. This collection will be available in three sizes: Robusto, Corona Gorda, and Toro. We're aiming for a release in the third quarter of this year. Keep your eyes peeled—there's never a dull moment around here!
