Discussion: How Do You Travel with Cigars?

Happy Wednesday, folks!

I’ve been flying back and forth with cigars recently, and it’s got me wondering:

How do YOU travel with cigars?

Login and comment below for a chance to win a Small Batch gift card this Sunday!

And let’s open this up to moving with cigars, shipping cigars to buddies, driving to herfs, the works! How do you do what you do?

The last few times that I’ve flown or moved with larger cigar counts was actually easier than smaller numbers.  Usually, I’ll just pad the vacant space in large coolers when flying or do something similar if using USPS to do the lifting.

Flying with Cigars

If you want to know how to make flying with cigars easier, read this

But flying with just a FEW cigars!?  That’s a whole different animal.  Especially when you leave the premises of Maxamar Ultimate Cigars loaded down with unbelievable and irreplaceable treats.

Realistically, I should’ve brought my travel humidors back from Afghanistan this last time.  That would’ve solved the case easily, and allowed me to throw ‘em in checked luggage without concern.  At the time, though, I could only think about how easy it would be not lugging them back to the states. Bad move, Dave... laziness isn't attractive!

But in that particular instance at Small Batch HQ, I brought the lovely Davidoff Travel Humidor along but without the slide-in built to protect roughly ~8 cigars.  It just happened to work out beautifully because I was transporting cigars there and had it available to transport cigars back.

And I’m just now returning from visiting Nicholas Melillo in Connecticut to shoot some video.  A gentleman by the name of Nate loaded me down with what he calls a ‘Power Pack’ – and I’m inclined to agree, it does feel powerful!  I happened to luck out, and still had the Davidoff Travel Humi in my backpack unburdened and ready to rock and roll.

But let's be honest... Nate packed these packs like he was auditioning to sling boxes at Small Batch!  I probably could've tucked 'em gently into my backpack and called it a day.

Can’t wait to see what you think from Nick’s video!

Tell Us!  How do you travel with cigars?

I always travel with a hard case and a boveda pack.  Mostly because I usually bring more than I will smoke or come back with some I bought.

Always with the travel humidors... Xikar 15 count or one of my 40 Blackwatch travel humidors. I’ve taken a 40-count as a carry-on with no issues.

I travel with:

1. Xikar Travel humidor, either a 5 or 15 count depending on how long the trip is.
2. Boveda packs (the small ones that come with Small Batch orders)
3. Djeep lighter
4. Punch cutter (have had too many cutters confiscated by TSA).

My question for the group is my travel humidor and small Boveda packs can't preserve my cigars that well in humid climates. Anyone use a full sized Boveda pack? I want to use one but am wondering if TSA will confiscate it for being a liquid.

I may be a bit boring but I don't actually own a travel humidor. I've wanted to purchase a Xikar Kit but I just haven't yet. Typically I will put a few cigars in a cigar zip lock bag with a small Boveda pack and shield them with my clothes lol. Not the most dignified, I admit. Gets the job done though!

I’ve never flown with cigars, but when I go places, I throw the cigars I want into what I believe was branded as a “herf-a-dor” with a boveda pack. Does the trick for me. I like the hard exterior, and it’s small (like 4-5 52 ring gauge cigars).

When I travel it's usually not for too long, so I use a small tupperware with a Boveda pack and my thermometer-hygrometer to gage that conditions are close to what I like. For fuel I take my cheapest lighter, and also matches as a backup, then for my cutter my trusty cigar scissors.

Travel humidor 5 or 15 count depending on the trip, with Boveda.

Joseph, I probably wouldn't risk bringing the huge 320g packs in my carry-on because that's roughly 11 ounces of liquid.  TSA prefers to keep things under 3.5 ounces I've been told, although I've had success with larger amounts sometimes.

The large 60g pack, however, would be completely fine even in your carry-on bag.  I wouldn't be considered at all for this size.

I always travel with tupperdors equipped with a boveda pack. I’m using tupperdore in plural tense because I always bring more than 1 because I smoke such a wide variety. I probably put more thought into packing my cigars than anything else.

I’ve only done it once, but it was on a trip to Austin with my one and only tupperdor—which meant all my sticks had to come with me. ‘Twas a bit risky of a move, so I put my trust in a 60g Boveda and it all worked out. The older sticks (as well as the new ones acquired in Austin) were all flawless when smoked after the traveling was done.

I carry a small Perdomo travel case with a boveda in it. I find the bigger challenge to be a lighter however.  I just had a Zippo with a butane soft flame replacement insert seized by the German equivalent of TSA this last week even though it met all of their requirements.

Usually just with a small Tupperware container and a boveda pack. I usually don't travel far, but I have flown with cigars this way and it turned out fine.

OK so I actually travel with a simple Tupperware with a boveda pack for 2-3 cigars. But the best part is I place it in my shoe( Size 12.5)I have no fear of these gems breaking and room for my lighter and cutter. My shoe -midor!!!

5 count travel humidor in the carry on, all other accessories in the checked luggage.
