Discussion: Oops! Forgot my cutter...

Happy Tuesday, folks!

I wanted to write a discussion post yesterday, but it just didn’t feel right given the somber reflections of Memorial Day.  Today, however, I’ve switched gears and am ready to talk about a moment that most of us have had:

What’s your go-to way to cut your cigar when you realize you don’t have a cutter?

Login and comment for a chance to win a Small Batch gift card this Sunday!

This actually happened to me very recently, when I realized I had time to smoke a cigar, a cigar shop en route to my destination, and none of my usual tools in hand.  I lucked out last week and picked up a cheap $10 lighter with a punch attachment, but I’ve been S.O.L. plenty of times in the past.

Here’s what I’ve personally used to great effect without damaging the cap or ruining the cigar:

  •      Fingernails (and I barely have any)
  •      Carpenter’s nail
  •      Sharp knife
  •      Teeth
  •      Car keys
  •      Sharp rock
  •      Beer bottle cap

The goal with each of these is to remove as little of the cap as possible, and most of the time I end up scrapping a punch-sized hole or shallow v-cut in the cap.  Even when using teeth, I found out a long time ago that I suck at biting caps off, and instead opt to use my incisor to remove just enough for smoking.

But you know what the ultimate no-nonsense way to cut your cigar is when you’ve left your cutter at home? The you-don’t-even-need-to-cut-your-cigar method!

Seriously though, this works.  I just lit up my Campesino for the evening this way to show you that with enough will power and lack of inhibition, you can do just about anything in the cigar world.

Here’s a few pics:

Just lit the cap itself, working my torch from the outside to the inside.

It should be noted, however, that this method isn’t without some downfalls.  Firstly, I’d only recommend it if you already smoke your cigar without slobbering on it.  Along the same lines, I’d advise chewers to stay well away from this sort of thing!

There are some other concerns such as the band removal process, but as long as you’re waiting until the heat from the cigar loosens the glue on the band, I don’t think it’ll be an issue.  The big whoopsie is that – you guessed it – you’re smoking the cigar backwards!  It isn’t the blenders intent, and sometimes it fails as an overall experience.  Sometimes, though, it actually rocks pretty hard.

Lastly, just because it combusts with adequate airflow doesn't mean it's an ideal situation.  The burn line on this cigar required touch-ups throughout, and didn't provide the usual Campesino White Label experience which is customarily flawless.  And, the head of the cigar is where cigar glue resides. Just sayin...

*The last method is more of an improvise, adapt, and overcome scenario and not recommended as a regular solution.

I have a spyderco pocket knife on me at all times. It stays razor sharp so I can very easily cut the first cap right off and get a perfect draw. I actually use this method for some more delicate cigars as it’s sharper than my xikar.

I just wet the cap enough with my lips to moisten the glue and peel it off. Uncle buck style

This is really interesting! I’ve never thought of flipping the cigar around. I, like the gent from Dallas, keep a razor sharp blade with me at all times. I also use a Xikar lighter was ith a punch on it as a backup.

I've resorted to teeth, a knife or fingernails!

I have thought about it but never had to resort to the flip and light. I usually have a spent casing rolling around in the back of my truck. Depending on the caliber they usually work well as a makeshift  punch.

.223/5.56 spent brass.. makes a punch cutter in a pinch.

I've forgot my cutter before while fishing and used my thumb nail to get the cap off. I've also out of pure curiosity taken caps off by using a razor blade and following the exact line of the cap, this actually when done right is better than using a cutter but if done wrong runs the risk of the leaf unraveling, so I went back to my Perfect Cutter. Always a good idea to keep those cheap plastic cutters in the clove box or with you fishing gear for those "oh crap" moments when you forget your cutter.

Yikes. I just can't bring myself to to be comfortable smoking a cigar backwards, even though it shouldn't seem so strange. I feel like the draw would be pretty different, at the very least.

I prefer to punch cigars, and you can usually find something that works. I've used sharp sticks in the woods.

I guess it's possible...lol  I have cheap cutters all over the place, a punch on my key ring and my lighter, and I usually have a knife.  It still could happened though and it has...On the golf course one time I got the cap wet and used a golf tee to punch cigar.  Not too sure about smoking the other end, I agree with other comment about probably changing the draw, but you got to do what you got to do.

I haven't had this situation come up yet but I bet I'd always be able to find something laying around to be able to poke through the cap.

Teeth I think would be my last resort.  There is no way I'd get a clean cut and I'd be spitting crap out through the entire cigar.

If I had any fingernails, I’d go with that, but I gotta go with pocket knife for the win!

I usually try and slice a small v-cut with my knife since I usually have it with me, but like Nicholas mentioned, I have also used spent brass. We used to sharpen them just a tad and use them even when not in a pinch.

Just have to improvise with what you have around you. The options are pretty limitless. I've used golf tees, knifes, teeth. If there's a will there's a way.

Chewing time

I have used a PerfecDraw to make a series of holes and then pop that part of the cap off. Worked for me.

I’ve used my fingernail to pry the cap off of go around in a circle like a punch. I keep a cheap key chain punch with my keys and my travel lighter has a flip out punch so I’m rarely in a situation where I  can’t cut my cigar.
5/30/2019 12:37 PM
Hasn’t happened to me but now I have some ideas! Usually keep a knife on me.
5/31/2019 5:40 PM
I have cutters stashed in so many places; cupboards, tool boxes, tackle box (separate compartment to keep it away from lure juice, worm and fish parts), glove box, etc.  I am rarely without a cutter, but my preferred method is the yamulke cut with a sharp knife.  I always have knives on me or near me.  Come to think of it, I once used the opening in a beer can, which I usually have plenty of those around as well.

Fingernails or nail through the top for me

Congrats to Marshall for winning this week's card!  Cheers to an awesome week, and thanks to everyone for participating :D

I've used the butt end of a wooden match before as a punch (was in a serious bind) but it did the trick!  Got two uses out of that matchstick!

I once used gardening shears to cut a cigar and have also used a very sharp pair of scissors :-)

I always prefer the hunter cut or X cut.  Always got a pocket knife
